Massage & Movement

Massage is the intentional and systematic manipulation of the soft tissues in the body. Different techniques have different effects and are applied in such a way to accomplish the specific goals of each session. The benefits of massage/bodywork for the body, mind, and spirit are vast and profound.

We all harbor areas of tension and tight muscles in our bodies due to our daily activities, stresses, and ways of life. Our posture, habits, hobbies, repetitive movements, injuries, traumas, emotions, and stress all affect our physical body and can result in imbalances that contribute to our ability to function optimally.

The body, mind, and spirit are all connected.

Chronically tight and contracted muscles pull our bodies out of proper alignment and create irritated areas, active trigger points, and adhesions (“knots”) that block the proper flow of blood, lymph, oxygen, nutrients, and nerve conduction. These areas of stagnation often cause pain, dysfunction, and a build-up of metabolic wastes (toxins) due to things getting stuck and not being able to move properly. This is one of the ways that pain can manifest in the body.

Unobstructed flow of bodily fluids, unimpaired nerve transmission, and free range of motion of the muscles and joints are all linked to health and vitality. Conversely, constriction, impingement, and excessive tightness are all associated with dysfunction and pain. Movement is a vital part of life. From the cellular to the organism level, movement and the harmonious flow of qi is necessary. We rely on healthy movement for all of life's processes including birth, the expansion and contraction of breath, and the peristalsis of digestion.

The Type of Work That I Do...

My style of bodywork integrates my knowledge and training in anatomy, kinesiology, and the pathways of the acupuncture channels. It is a fusion of myofascial, trigger point, meridian, and energy work with structural integration, neuromuscular facilitation, tuina, craniosacral, and muscle energy techniques.

Muscular imbalances associated with pain and dysfunction involve areas of tight/excess muscles accompanied by other areas that are weak/deficient. I work to bring awareness to these holding patterns and to help correct these imbalances by softening and relaxing what is tight/excess while simultaneously tonifying and strengthening what is weak/deficient.

In a treatment session, we will discuss your health history, goals, and discover the underlying reasons for your pain and discomfort. Postural analysis, range of motion, and muscle testing are often implemented in this process. We work together to release constrictions, relax myofascial tissues, create space, and restore balance, flow, and ease of movement throughout the body.

Some of the main goals of therapeutic bodywork sessions are to ease pain, stress, and tension so that you can feel more at home and comfortable in your body. Depending on your unique individual presentation and goals, treatment sessions incorporate a variety bodywork techniques along with moxibustion, cupping, gua sha, kinesiotaping, and possibly magnets.

In addition to all of the wonderful physical advantages, therapeutic massage is also beneficial for anxiety, depression, and stress management.

Massage allows us to quell and sedate the sympathetic (yang) aspect of our nervous system - the “fight or flight,” stressed out, adrenaline ridden side of our nervous system that is often in overdrive in our modern society and way of life. At the same time, it activates the parasympathetic (yin) aspect of our nervous system. This is the “rest and digest” side that allows us to enter a state of calmness, peacefulness, and relaxation. It is only when we enter this state of rest and recovery that the healing process can take place and our body is able to repair, heal, and regenerate.
